Designer Discussion with Andrea D’Cruz from D’Cruz Design Group

The Mermaid Ave project was a bold renovation led by designer Andrea D’Cruz in partnership with One Up Building. Together, we transformed a weathered cliffside property into a modern, future-proof home designed for long-term living, overcoming complex challenges along the way.

In this interview, Andrea reflects on the project, her experience working with us, and what she thinks sets our approach apart from other construction groups.

When did you work on the Mermaid Ave project with One Up Building?
From 2021 to 2023.

What was the aim of the project, and how did you collaborate with One Up Building to achieve it?
The goal was a full renovation, including lift access, to future-proof the home for long-term occupancy. This required rebuilding almost every internal and external element due to damage from harsh weather conditions. I invited One Up Building to tender for the project because I trusted their ability to navigate the challenges of this difficult site and deliver exceptional results.

How did you first connect with the One Up Building team?
I first met the team in 2010 on a project in Millers Point. After that, I worked with them on projects in Woollahra and Clovelly.

How long did the project take, and how did One Up Building ensure it stayed on track?
While I can’t recall the exact timeline, it was roughly 18 months. One Up’s strong project management skills were key to keeping things on track.

What were your expectations of One Up Building, and how did they meet them?
Having worked with them on previous projects, I had high expectations and confidence in their ability to deliver. They met these expectations by achieving the desired results with professionalism and attention to detail.

What was your favourite part of the build and why?
The final stages of the build are always my favourite, as it’s incredibly rewarding to see the 2D designs come to life in 3D.

Were there any unexpected challenges during the build?
Absolutely. A renovation of this scale often uncovers issues, and this project required significant remedial work.

What sets One Up Building apart in delivering projects on time, within budget, and to high standards?
Their extensive experience, collaborative approach, problem-solving skills, and focus on achieving the best outcomes for everyone involved—clients, architects, and designers alike—make them exceptional.

Can you share an example of how One Up Building overcame a challenge during the project?
The site’s cliffside location made access incredibly difficult. One Up took great care to ensure materials were transported to the site safely and efficiently, overcoming this significant logistical challenge.

Would you recommend One Up Building, and why?
Absolutely. I’ve already introduced them to another client, and we’re set to start construction on that project in 2025.
